In-Demand Skills for Boardsports Careers

(That Have Nothing to Do with Riding)

You live and breathe boardsports. Your screen time is a constant scroll of surf edits, skate clips, and powder runs. You know the history, you follow the pros, and you can spot a classic board shape from a mile away. But maybe your pop shove-it is more of a “pop-and-pray,” or your bottom turn is less “poetry in motion” and more “controlled fall.”

That doesn’t matter. You don’t need pro-level talent to build an incredible career.

There’s a huge difference between talent and skill. Talent is that innate, almost magical ability you’re born with; the natural balance and flair that sets the pros apart. Skills, on the other hand, are developed through dedication and practice. While not everyone has the raw talent to make the WSL or the Olympics, almost anyone can develop the skills for a phenomenal career in the industry they love if they apply themselves.

The truth is, for every pro athlete, there’s a whole army of talented individuals working behind the scenes to make the magic happen. These are the people who design the gear, market the brands, and tell the stories that inspire us all. You just need the right skills.

Here are some of the most in-demand skills in the boardsports industry that have absolutely nothing to do with your ability to ride:

1. Digital Marketing & Social Media Savvy

A brand’s online presence is everything these days. Boardsports companies are constantly looking for people who can create engaging content, manage social media communities, and run effective digital marketing campaigns. Knowing your way around Instagram and TikTok is a start, but the real value lies in understanding the tools that drive results. Genuinely listing skills with platforms like Meta Ads Manager for targeted campaigns, Later or Buffer for content scheduling, and email marketing platforms like Klaviyo on your resume will make you a much more attractive candidate. There are plenty of online courses and YouTube videos you can watch for free, then simply start an account on the platform you want to upskill in and play around.

Key Skills: Content creation (video, photo, and written), social media management, SEO/SEM, email marketing automation, and data analytics.

2. Sales & E-commerce Expertise

At the end of the day, boardsports companies are businesses. They need people who can sell their gear. With the explosion of online shopping, e-commerce expertise is non-negotiable. Being proficient with dominant e-commerce platforms, especially Shopify, is critical. Understanding how to manage online stores, optimize product listings, and integrate marketing tools is a highly sought-after skill set. Familiarity with inventory management software and customer relationship management (CRM) systems will also set you apart.

Key Skills: Customer service, relationship building, negotiation, inventory management, and proficiency with e-commerce and CRM platforms.

3. Product Design & Development

Every board, binding, and piece of apparel starts with an idea. If you’re a creative person with a passion for design, a career in product development could be your dream job. You don’t need to be a pro rider to have a great idea for a new product, but you do need to understand the needs of the riders and the technical aspects of design and manufacturing. If you’re surf, skate or snow  obsessed, chances are you already know what works, what is just okay, and what bugs the hell out of you with your own equipment. The real trick is figuring out ways to make things better. Knowledge of materials and industrial design will give you a major advantage.

Key Skills: Graphic design, industrial design, CAD software, material science, and an understanding of the product development lifecycle.

4. Logistics & Supply Chain Management

Ever wonder how that new wetsuit you ordered online gets from the factory to your front door? That’s the magic of logistics and supply chain management. This is a crucial, and often overlooked, part of the boardsports industry. If you’re an organized person who loves a good spreadsheet, a career in logistics could be a surprisingly rewarding path. Plenty of people have started as picker/packer in the warehouse and made their way up into management. Start small but dream big.

Key Skills: Inventory management, shipping and receiving, freight forwarding, and an understanding of global trade and customs regulations.

5. Sustainability & Environmental Science

The boardsports world is deeply connected to the natural environment. As a result, there’s a growing movement towards sustainability and environmental responsibility within the industry. Patagonia is the obvious company leading the way, but other brands like Rip Curl and Creatures of Leisure are already registered B Corps too. That push is only getting stronger. Companies are looking for people who can help them reduce their environmental impact, source sustainable materials, and create more eco-friendly products. If you’re passionate about protecting the planet, a career in sustainability could be a way to combine your love for boardsports with your desire to make a difference.

Key Skills: Environmental science, sustainable sourcing, life cycle assessment, and an understanding of environmental regulations and certifications.

The bottom line is this: you don’t have to be a pro to work in the boardsports industry. You just have to be passionate, dedicated, and willing to learn. So, take a good look at your skills and interests, and see where you might fit in. Your dream job could be just around the corner. See below for our latest openings…
