The Best Way To Use AI When Applying For Jobs

It’s never been a better time to throw your boardshorts in the mix for a new gig. Why? Because applying for jobs has never been easier, thanks to our new unpaid intern: artificial intelligence. Need to update your CV? Feed it some dot points and AI will spit out something fancier than a Stussy x Dior collab board. Need a cover letter? Paste in a job ad and AI will analyse it like a little corporate Sherlock then tailor your application accordingly. It’s fast. It’s smart. It’s… maybe too good? Because here’s the catch:

Everyone’s doing it.

Recruiters are getting absolutely flooded with cover letters that all sound like they were written by the same polite, slightly robotic genius. If you ask that genius to write it for you in a ‘boardsports’ tone of voice, it’s likely to throw in some doozy lines like you’re ‘a gnarly manager who eats fresh pow for breakfast’, or that you’re ready to ‘wipeout on your current job and say cowabunga to a new one.

Nope. Nope. Nope.

So how do you use AI to get ahead without becoming just another blend-in bot or a cheesy kook? Let’s break it down. Here are the best ways to use AI when applying for jobs in boardsports.

1. Use AI to Get Your CV Up To Date (Finally)

Got some new achievements? New title? You ran a team or launched a product or survived your last boss? Great. AI can take your vague bullet points and turn them into something tight, clear, and impressive. Think of it as your hype writer.

Your CV needs to be sharp — no fluff, no War & Peace. Tools like ChatGPT, Teal or Rezi can turn your experience into something readable, relevant, and recruiter-proof in minutes. NeverWork has our own in the works too which is pretty damn neat.

Just remember to actually read it back. If it says you’re a “motivated go-getter who thrives in dynamic environments,” delete that. You’re not responding to a job ad from 2007.

2. Use AI to Draft Your Application Letter

Find the job, copy the ad, paste it into your AI of choice and ask it to write a letter that matches what they’re after. For bonus points, you can also upload your new CV so it can select relevant qualifications recruiters are looking for. Here’s a prompt to help once you’ve given it the context:

I’m applying for the job below and have also included my CV. Based on both, please write a professional cover letter tailored to this role and designed to help me land an interview. Keep the tone confident, clear, and human — not too formal or robotic.

Before writing, ask me any clarifying questions you need to make the letter as relevant and persuasive as possible.

Once you’ve clarified any unknowns for the AI, it’ll get to work. Done right, the result will highlight your experience, link it to their needs, and make you sound like a dream fit. This will save you hours and give you a solid foundation. The format will be tight. The length will be spot on.

But don’t send it yet. Not even close.

3. PERSONALISE EVERYTHING!

This is the secret sauce. And yeah, we’re yelling it on purpose. AI can get you to 80% faster than ever. But that last 20% is where all the magic is. The human stuff. The voice. The vibe. The proof you actually want this job, not just a job.

Add something personal:

– Mention a recent campaign, product, or post the company made and what you liked about it.

– Say why this role actually excites you.

– Use words you’d actually say. (If you wouldn’t say “synergy” out loud, don’t write it.)

– Show your personality. Be specific. Be human.

The goal isn’t just to get noticed — it’s to make someone go,

“Oh. This person actually gives a shit.”

Because in a sea of AI-generated blandness, even one small bit of honesty stands out

Final Thoughts

AI is your assistant, not your twin. It helps you move faster. Write sharper. Sound smarter. But it’s not you — and it shouldn’t be. You still need to show up. To shape it. To give it your tone and intent and, frankly, your guts.  If you’re applying for jobs now, AI can absolutely help you get in the door. But it’s your voice that’ll actually get you invited inside.

AI’s worth trying: Open AI, Claude (especially for anything code based) or Gemini on Google.
